Welcome to Part 5 of Holy Week. I am hoping that you are truly enjoying this series. There is only 2 more days left of Holy Week Events. Today is we are going to take a look at why today is called Good Friday, and what happened today (Friday). We are in the home stretch of Holy Week, with the culmination of Easter.
There is a ton of scripture today. So, I will not be putting that much scripture in today’s blog. I will reference it and you can take the time to look it up. My prayer is that you are enjoying reading this blog, and it brings your closer to Him. For we can nothing without Him in our lives.
So, without further procrastinating, here is Part 5 of Holy Week.
Why do we call it Good Friday? To begin with let’s take a look at Romans 8:28: 28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose. We know that Romans was written by Paul the Apostle. Paul was not even one of the original 12 apostles ( I will be getting into more detail about Paul in another blog). The world can be an evil place at times, yet we know that God works in all things for the good. I am NOT suggesting that God created evil or sin. God works in spite of it.
It is called Good Friday, because by Jesus’ death, he became the final, complete sacrifice for OUR sins. We alone can not erase our sins, but through Jesus we are able to be forgiven for our sins, because He was the ultimate sacrifice. Through His death, Jesus fulfilled scripture in both the Old Testament and the New Testament.
Good Friday was the last day of Jesus’ life on earth before His resurrection. Prior to this we know that He was betrayed by Judas, as predicted. He was arrested, and put on trial. As predicted by scripture, that Peter denied Him three times. Jesus was actually put on trial four (4) times.
- He was put on trial before Caiaphas
- He was on trial before the Sanhedrin
- He was on trial before Pilate, and finally
- He was on trial before Herod
We know that Judas committed suicide. If you look in Matthew 27:5: 5 So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself. Judas was seized with remorse for taking the money, and was guilty because he betrayed an innocent man. As scripture put it, he betrayed innocent blood.
After His trial, and He was condemned to die, He was beaten, mocked and beaten, had a crown of thorns placed on his head, and finally made to carry his own cross to the place where he was crucified and died. Jesus was offered something to dull the pain, but Jesus refused. He chose to face the pain of death head on. They stripped his clothes from him and mocked him.
When Jesus got to the place of his death, there were two (2) prisoners there that were also crucified alongside of him. The one man mocked him, and the other said “Jesus. remember me when you come into your kingdom. ” Jesus responded to him: “Truly, I tell you will be with me in paradise”. Amidst the most cruel, unfair, unjust, and painful death a human body could endure. Jesus responded in grace to the criminal next to him. At noon, Jesus cried out “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit…”, with that the earth was dark, there was an earthquake. The soldiers pierced his side to make sure that he was in fact dead.
After his death, they took him down from the cross, wrapped him in linens, placed him in the tomb, and sealed it with it a stone. Stay tuned, the best is yet to come.
I hope that you enjoyed this, as much as I have enjoyed writing this. Please leave a comment, or thought.
