Holy Week Events Part 1

Holy week has started yesterday, and will continue through Easter Sunday. I wanted to start this yesterday, but I did not get to it. So today you will have 2 days. I hope that you enjoy this. I would like to take a moment and thank Margie for helping me with the first day(which was Sunday). I hope that you enjoy reading this post as much as I enjoyed doing it.

You are going to find that the story of Holy week, Jesus death, and resurrection in all 4 of the gospels. What I find interesting is that the point of views are totally different. I am not going to detail the differences, but just make a mental note of this as you read on.

Palm Sunday, which was yesterday was kind of short on verses, but it does have plenty of information. Jesus made his return to Jerusalem on a donkey. As he entered the town people came to see him, and laid palms on the ground in front of him. It was traditional at the time for Kings to ride on a donkey in time of peace. Jesus is King of kings, but God wanted him to bring peace. The bible refers to Jesus as the Prince of Peace. As he rode down the street people were eager to see him. In the good times people find it easy to love and follow him, but when the government challenged Jesus, people did not acknowledge, because they were afraid that they would be persecuted.

Here is the verses in Matthew about him getting the donkey and his return to Jerusalem: Matthew 21:19

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”

This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:

“Say to Daughter Zion,
‘See, your king comes to you,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”[a]

The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,

Hosanna[b] to the Son of David!”

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”[c]

“Hosanna[d] in the highest heaven!”

Monday: After spending the night in Bethany, Jesus returned to Jerusalem. Jesus became hungry and saw a fig tree that bared no fruit, the tree should have had fruit on it. Jesus then cursed the fig tree. In Matthew 21:18-19: 18 Early in the morning, as Jesus was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. 19 Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” Immediately the tree withered.

Once he went back to Jerusalem, he went to the temple. There he confronted the people making money off of those that came to worship. We see here that he (Jesus) got angry and tipped over tables. We see that Jesus was human and had true of emotions from being human. This the second instance, the first one is above where he cursed the fig tree.

12 Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. 13 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’[a] but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’[b]

On this day, people heard and witnessed Jesus’ miracles and sang praises to Him. This caused authorities to begin looking for ways to kill him.

I hope that you enjoyed this post. Please either leave a comment or a like. It would be greatly appreciated.
